Cool Idea For Cool People Who Like To Do Cool Nails

If you're like me then you love coming up with new ideas to paint on your nails. We've already discussed the newspaper nails and marble nails but I have some new tips and tricks to make your nails look even better!
While I was on Stumble Upon the other day, I "stumbled upon" a tutorial about these new glitter nails. The nails don't even have a name but they kind of remind me of stardust, or something along those lines. Fisrt, paint your nails any color you desire. When I do mine tomorrow I think I'm going to do a light pink or nude color. Those are obviously my favorites. Anyways, right after you apply your second coat of polish, find any loose eye shadow that you have laying around and a spoon. Once you have those two items, scoop a little bit of the eye shadow and put it right at the end of your nail . Half of it should be on your nail and half on your skin (you can use your cuticle as a dividing line). Next, you're going to gently blow the small amount of eye shadow across your nail. Now, if you want this to work properly, you're nails need to be wet, and I mean WET. The end result should look like the eye shadow is descending over your nail. Just put on a shiny, fast drying, top coat and you're all set to show off these bad boys. Seriously though, this design is so easy, even a caveman can do it! Until next time....

A Tribute to Other Nail Blogs!

Sorry I'm a little late on this post! I guess Thanksgiving break got the best of me. Seeing friends and family is always fun, but I'm ready to get back to school and finish the next three weeks strong.
Have you ever seen nails that that had perfect little polkadots covering them? You just have to wonder how the artist did such a precise job, or at least I was curious. Well, after doing a little research, I found that in order to get perfect dotted nails, you have to buy dotting pens! Now, I'm not sure if they are intended for designing nails but they are absolutely perfect! I actually bought a pack of five for only five bucks on eBay! I don't think I've been this excited to get something in the mail since I was in Kindergarten.
Since last Thursday I think it's necessary to dedicate part of this post to nail blogs that I'm thankful for! The only problem is that some of the titles for the blog need to be censored. So, just don't look at the heading or take this as a warning! My absolute favorite is called F**K Yeah Nail Art!. This is where I get most of my ideas for the nails I do. They also show good products like glitter and matte polishes! Other favorites of mine are, fyeahnails and F**K Yeah Pretty Nails. Please forgive me again for my language, I'm trying to keep in censored! But all of these blogs are similar but give something different. All three re-blog other nail blogs regularly so I find good tutorials and even more ideas. I recommend that everyone check these blogs out if you want to feel inspired!

Extra, Extra, Read All About It!

I totally found the cutest nail designs ever! They're called newspaper nails and are so easy to do. If you read the article, it tells you everything you need, but I can just tell you here to make it easier! Ok, so all you really need is a good base coat, a light color nail polish, newspaper, rubbing alcohol, top coat, nail polish remover, cotton balls and scissors. I'm going to do mine tonight and I think I'm going to use a nude color or light brown, because I want to keep with the autumn color scheme. I'll make sure to post pictures of them tonight when I'm done.
The next design I'm excited to tell you guys about is marble nails! They can also be called tie-dye nails. These nails take a lot more effort and are VERY messy. But they're extremely cute and can be done for any occasion. You can do cotton candy colors like baby pink and sky blue and swirl them together with a toothpick or needle! Or, for Christmas, you could swirl red, green and white! Anything goes with tye-dye nails. Once I get a little more time on my hands, I'm going to get really creative and work in some glitter! Well, that basically sums up what I needed to say this week! I'll be sure to post pictures of any nails I do including my newspaper nails!

This my commercial for The Snuggie!

2 Week Old Baby Rescued From Rubble

October 23, 2011 was a very tragic day for Eastern Turkey. A debilitating 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck killing hundreds and leaving many more homeless. One miraculous survival story came when 2 week old Azra Karaduman was rescued on October 25 from the rubble of her parents apartment complex. She was immediately given oxygen and taken to the hospital for more care. The infants mother and grandmother were also saved while her father is still trapped and remains unfound.

Union Turnpike Nail Salons...The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

As we all know, when driving up and down Union Turnpike basically anything we could even need can be found.  Tanning, sushi, Coldstone, numerous banks, bars, bakeries are all on a strip just a few steps outside of Gate 3. One thing that I've especially noticed is the plethora of nail salons that line the street.
I swear, every three buildings is a nail salon. We have Cozy Nails, Kim's Nail Spa, that one building that just says Nail Salon and many more. If you walk down the street toward Beach Bum Tanning you will find a nail salon who has had their Grand Re-Opening sign up since we got here in August. Anyways, I want to fill you guys in on how good, or bad some of these salons are.
I remember talking about my bad experience with the Shellac manicure at the one nail salon that had the Grand Re-Opening. So you can bet that I will not be giving good reviews on their services. My friend came along to get a manicure and nail polish was left on the sides of her fingers (so not cute). Although the price was very inexpensive the service was exactly what we paid for.
Cozy Nail Salon was my second encounter with salons on Union Turnpike and lets just say that I was again, less than impressed. I actually didn't get my nails done there but my friend Veronica got her acrylic nails filled. Besides the dirty, dungy environment, Veronica's nails just flung off one by one in the following days. Now that is not worth the price she paid. Although $25 is not that over the top, I spend about ten dollars less at home and get way better quality. It is safe to say I will not be going to Cozy Nails!
Now today my friend Melissa and I decided to pamper ourselves a little bit and get manicures and pedicures. She got the pedicure while I got the manicure if you were wondering. Anyways, I was very impressed with Kim's Nail Spa. The service, price and environment was everything that I could've asked for. Here's a picture of my finished product!
The Sparkly one is called Rainbow Connection and it's part of the The Muppets line through OPI!

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

It's practically my favorite holiday, Halloween! Yay! I mean it's not really my favorite because, c'mon, who loves Halloween more than their birthday or Christmas? Not many. So Halloween is kind of my third favorite holiday, but in the festive nature, I'm dedicating this entire post to spooky nails!
Ok, HOW CUTE ARE THESE? I wish I came up with this idea on my own, and earlier, so that I could have done these while it was still the Halloween season. I know their not spooky or anything but I just couldn't resist. Also, these nails are good for girls all ages. I know I will definitely be flaunting candy corn nails this next year as soon as people start talking about Halloween!
Besides the ghastly ghosts, the nail art on these aren't too spooky either but, they are nonetheless cute as a little bulldog puppy with a bow around it's neck! Even though I'm pretty good at doing nails (not to toot my own horn), I'm not that good. I would, however, pay to get these done if they would last for a few weeks!
These are by far the cutest and spookiest nails I found. The glitter and bling make it so that you don't scare little kids away. But the freakish eye balls totally scream All Hollows Eve. I'm sure they're easy to do too. If you wanted to put them on acrylics I would suggest putting all of the embellishments on the fake nail before glueing them onto your real nail!

Fall Fashion Trends!

Can you believe that most of the Northeast and parts of New York City got snow this past weekend?! I wasn't planning on seeing snow covered grass for at least another month. But I guess this is just Mother Nature doing her thang. Even though the snow is a full indication that dark colors and deep hues are back in full swing, my friends insist that they still have a few weeks to daunt bright pinks and summery colors on their nails! THIS IS A NO NO! Once September 21 rolls around, ditch the florescent and bring in the deep, depressing colors of the cold fall and winter months! Currently I have all black nails with a little splash of glitter on each nail except for my ring... that one is completely glitter-fied!
I know that in one of my past posts I wrote about some new fall trends, however, as I was doing some research on a gloomy day, I stumbled upon an article that CBS Los Angeles posted about this years tips and tricks. Blogger, Alyson Fishbein, reported that neutrals, metallics, color blocking, nail appliques, and glitter would give you award winning style in the manicure world. I can say that I completely agree with her since I have tried, and loved all of these styles. Of course the glitter is always my favorite, but you can always mix and match (maybe metallics and glitter) to make your fashionable look unique! Well, it's time for me to go get my West Coast friends accustomed to the cold weather and "snow" outside! Until next time...

Shellac Nails. Ugh.

So, like I said last week, I'm going to tell you guys a little about my newest discovery in the manicure world. It's called Shellac manicure and honestly, I'm not that impressed with how it turned out.
I definitely didn't hate only paying $18 at one of the nearby salons, but then again, maybe that's why I was less than satisfied with the results. I will say though, that it's been a solid week and a half that I've had my manicure done and it has not chipped much at all. Also, the color selection was not very broad, so I had to settle for a very pale pink that I later revved up with a little bit of gold glitter.

Besides all of my complaints, the process of Shellac manicures is actually kind of cool. First, the technician will put a base coat on your nails to protect them. Once that step is done the color of choice is painted on to your nails and then placed under a UV light for about three minutes. This step is done over and over about five times and then bada bing - bada boom, your nails are completely hardened and lookin' fab!
I'm not sure if I'll ever get a Shellac manicure again. That is primarily because I like doing my own nails. I bet that if I went to a better salon, paid a little more money, and got a shade that I was in love with, I would have been a lot happier with the results. For now though, I'll just stick to being crafty and doing my nails all by myself!

Interview with Jamaan

Last week I had the opportunity to interview one of my fellow classmates, Jamaan Mills. His friendliness and outgoing personality are just a few aspects that make Jaamins life so interesting. Listen to the full interview and find out some of his favorite things and hidden talents!

Q: What are things you like to do in your free time?
A: I like to take like long drives to places. I’m a walker so I'll like walk and explore different areas.

Q: What’s your favorite food?
A: Like I have like favorite junks foods. Like I like cotton candy and things like that.

Q: What was your favorite vacation memory?
A: I would have to say to Chicago. Like, it was completely different like I’m from a city myself but like when you go somewhere else you think you know how it’s going to be but it’s just like so different.

Q: What is your hidden talent?
A: My hidden talent is probably singing. Like my mom didn’t even know I could sing.

Fall Fun!

Even though this past weekend has had temperatures in the high 70’s and 80’s, fall is in full swing with the changing of the leaves and an almost constant breeze that reminds us of the brisk days ahead. Just like every other season, there are new trends that come out for fall. This doesn’t just apply to clothes either. Nail colors and designs change just like the seasons. Here are some colors and designs that are fabulous for fall!
Deep shades like plum, candy apple red, olive green, nude and brown are all necessary and chic for fall fashion. The colors kind of resemble the foliage of the trees when you’re driving though the hilly region of Upstate New York (also, my hometown). OPI actually has a line out called “Touring America” which has polish titles like  "Get in the Expresso Lane", a brown color perfect for September, October and November.
This season you’ll be seeing more and more celebrities doing a reverse type of French manicure. Also, you will see nails that resemble a shape that someone like Cat Women would have. They look like a cats claws and are not very appealing to me. It could be because I personally like shorter nails that are just a tad rounded but mostly square-ish. However, I might try this style out just to see how I like it, even if it’s just for a few days.
Well, that’s about all for this week’s update. Next week be prepared for my input on my newest fascination, Shellac manicures!

R.I.P. Summer 2011

As September 22 came and went, so did the final day of summer. It's officially fall, one of my four favorite seasons (wink, wink), and it's starting to get cold! Earlier this week, I tried to give my nails at last attempt of being summery. One thing that always reminds me of summer? WATERMELONS!

Another reason I decided to do watermelons is because there's this little holiday that's coming up at the end of October. It just so happens that one theme of the holiday weekend, which for some college kids, is the weekend leading up to Halloween, the night before, and the actual day of Halloween (yes, i know it's on a Monday), is fruits! My girl friends and I are going to be a walking fruit basket for one night of the Halloween celebration. CAN'T WAIT.

nails, nails, nails, galore

So this is my first official post about the whole purpose of this blog! I've done some pretty cool designs and things that I want you guys to get ideas from! Enjoy :)

I did these for my 18th birthday!
Called them "Birthday Party Chic"

 I loved these nails!
They're the Sally Hansen do-it-yourself nail decals.
They kind of remind me of minxed nails and they're cheap!
You can never go wrong with animal print.
 Another of my personal faves.
These nails made me so hungry just looking at them!
They're so springy!
Fruit Salad Anyone?
 These are my current nails.
I actually did them while I was waiting for my laundry to be done!
Pearls and glitter are always a necessity.
These are my friend Melissa's nails
She said they remind her of Barbie which I can completely agree with.
Nothing screams "Barbie" like pink, glitter, and rhinestones!
I wanted to do something a little opposite with these nails so I chose two neutral colors.
I used a beige and grey and incorporated rhinestones and pearls (like usual)
We'll call these, "Opposites Attract"
And last, but not least, my nails for Fashion's Night Out
They were very simple, yet VERY intricate.
They took me about two hours to do and only lasted a few days,
but I still loved them!

What the Blog?

Ok well, I'm Giovanna obviously and this is my first ever blog experience (so don't be alarmed at my horrible font choices and uninteresting posts at first).  Anyways, our assignment is to write about what makes us tick, so let me go on to tell you that I am, as Deena from Jersey Shore would say, "a blast in a glass." I'm a little crazy at times but I just like to live my life to the fullest and experience all that I can. My motto is work hard, play hard. Because, after all, the whole reason I'm at St. John's is to get a degree, not party my ass off. I'm kind - hearted and always looking for the good in people. However, now that I feel like i just posted an ad on Match.com let me go on to talk about what really makes my world go around.
I live my life through other people's happiness and love cheering people up when they're upset or having a bad day. I have five best friends (Bridget, Renee, Tayler, Kaileen and Danielle) that I would absolutely die without. We have the most ridiculous inside jokes and conversations that any sane individual would contemplate getting us checked out. Bridget, Kaileen, Danielle and I have a different bond, based completely off of our weekly TV shows: Teen Mom, The Bachelorette, Pretty Little Liars, The Lying Game and our personal favorite, The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Besides being a couch potato every night I actually do have a life, shocking I know.
I LOVE working and making my own money. I've had a job at Poppy's Ice Cream for the past three summers and I'm actually obsessed with working there. My bosses, Dave and Carla, and all of the girls I work with are like my third family, behind Bridget and Kaileen's family being second, or first at times. When I'm not working at Poppy's I always have another job, this winter was KMart, unfortunately. Having a job has taught me a lot about myself and made me a lot more independent than the majority of kids in my high school.
Okay, so I've covered my work life and my "social" life so what else can I talk about? Oh yeah, maybe the whole idea behind this blog. Well, I love being creative and different from everyone else and the way I do that is through my nails. I come up with cute designs and color schemes and add little embellishments to them. I know, like who makes a blog about nails, but they are actually a huge fashion statement and important to a lot of people. so just give it a chance! I'll be posting pictures of all of my creations, maybe some trend alerts, tips and tricks, the whole schebang! Thanks for reading! xo
